Trump says U.S. will target new tariffs on Canadian dairy, lumber in days

The new tariffs could start as soon as Friday or early next week, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, claiming Canada has been 'ripping us off for years.'

President Trump has announced plans to impose new tariffs on Canadian dairy and lumber, aiming to match what he describes as high Canadian duties on U.S. products. These tariffs could take effect as early as this week and are separate from previously announced reciprocal tariffs set to begin April 2. They will be in addition to existing 25% tariffs on Canadian goods and 10% duties on energy, with some products exempt under North American trade rules. Trump has criticized Canada's supply management system under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which slightly expanded U.S. dairy access. He claims Canada imposes up to 250% tariffs on U.S. dairy, a claim denied by Canadian officials. The U.S. has also long contested Canada's lumber policies, accusing them of subsidizing the industry.
