Trump’s latest 25% tariff proposal targets cars, chips and pharmaceuticals

On February 21, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on automobile, semiconductor, and pharmaceutical imports. The tariffs, expected to be finalized by April 2, aim to address what Trump describes as "unfair" trade practices. Mexico, the U.S.'s largest export market for these goods, is expected to be significantly impacted. Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard will meet with U.S. officials on February 22 to discuss the tariffs and potential trade routes. Additionally, Trump has emphasized creating a North American supply chain for semiconductors and has delayed the implementation of tariffs on pharmaceuticals and chips to allow companies time to establish U.S.-based operations. Other news includes the capture of Sinaloa Cartel operatives in Culiacán, the discovery of a rare fish near Loreto, and plans for a new marine reserve in Baja California Sur.
