UK hit with bluetongue virus warning as outbreak restricted zone widens

The bluetongue restriction zone has been extended after cases were discovered outside of the current restricted zone, with new cases coming as the UK is in a seasonally vector low period

The UK has expanded its bluetongue virus (BTV-3) restriction zone following new cases detected in Cheshire and Cumbria, outside the initial restricted areas. The virus, spread by midges, primarily affects sheep, cattle, and other ruminants. DEFRA and the Animal Health and Plant Agency widened the zone on February 14 after cases were found in Dorset. Farmers must obtain licenses to move animals or germinal products out of restricted zones, conduct pre-movement tests, and apply for licenses to freeze germinal products. The UK is in a seasonally low transmission period, but 16 cases have been detected in areas now outside the restricted zone, with affected animals transported before restrictions were implemented.
