UK Labour Gov't Announces Crackdown on Online Retailers to Combat Knife Crime Among Minors

The UK Labour government has announced new measures to combat knife crime, targeting online retailers. Dubbed “Ronan’s Law” in memory of 16-year-old Ronan Kanda, who was murdered in 2022, the legislation increases penalties for selling knives to minors or banned blades, raising the maximum jail sentence from six months to two years. Online retailers will also be required to notify police about suspicious knife purchases to prevent resale on social media. The government plans to consult on a registration scheme for online retailers, potentially restricting knife sales to “responsible sellers.” Additionally, a new offense of “possessing an offensive weapon with intent for violence” will be added to the Crime and Policing Bill. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the need to address the ease with which minors can access knives online. The focus on online retailers follows high-profile cases, including the 2023 Southport mass stabbing, where the attacker purchased a knife on Amazon.
