UK's first permanent facial recognition cameras to be installed in south London despite backlash

Campaigners described the move as a ‘slide into a dystopian nightmare’

The UK's first permanent live facial recognition (LFR) cameras will be installed in Croydon, south London by the Metropolitan Police as part of a pilot project to catch criminals. The cameras will be fixed to lampposts or buildings and alert officers when images match individuals on a wanted list. This permanent installation is intended to be a "business as usual" approach, offering more flexibility than relying on LFR vans. While supporters believe it will deter criminals, privacy advocates express concerns about the lack of oversight and legislative basis.
