UN hails rare climate success story as emissions from construction stop rising

2024 represents only non-pandemic year when building emissions have stalled – but will the progress last?

A UN report indicates that global emissions from the building and construction sector stalled in 2024, remaining at 2023 levels despite continued urbanization. This is attributed to increased energy efficiency and stricter building codes, but the UN warns that progress is too slow to meet 2030 climate goals, especially given that half of new buildings lack mandatory energy codes, particularly in emerging economies. The UN urges nations to adopt mandatory zero-carbon building codes by 2028 (major emitters) or 2035 (all others), along with increased renewable energy use and circular construction practices.
