Union unveils plan to secure future of Scunthorpe British Steel site

Community says its proposal will ensure the continued operation of two blast furnaces while two new electric furnaces are constructed.

The Community union has proposed a plan to sustain the Scunthorpe British Steel site by maintaining current blast furnaces and introducing electric arc furnaces (EAFs) to transition to greener steel production. The plan requires £200 million in government support to manage carbon costs. The union highlights the site's importance to national security, as its closure would leave the UK without domestic steelmaking capacity. British Steel supports the proposal and is in discussions with the government, which has committed £2.5 billion to revitalize the steel industry. The government aims for a green transition that benefits workers and taxpayers, as outlined in their consultation plan.
