Waymo received a temporary permit to map roadways at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), a first step towards potential robotaxi operations. The permit, effective March 14, requires Waymo to share data after each mapping session and signals a phased approach involving mapping, autonomous testing, and eventually, commercial operations. While representing progress after a failed attempt in 2023, Waymo will eventually need a separate ground transportation permit to operate at SFO.
