White House tells DOGE to save its Signal chats after leak and legal questions over its use

Staffers in the newly formed government organization were reminded to preserve all work-related communications – including those on Signal

The White House instructed DOGE (Department of Government of Efficiency) staff to preserve all work-related communications, including Signal messages, to comply with the Presidential Records Act after a leak revealed discussions about a military operation in a Signal group chat involving Trump administration cabinet members and a journalist. This followed a lawsuit by American Oversight seeking to compel DOGE and Elon Musk to preserve these communications, which the government claims is already being done. The White House asserts that no classified information was exchanged and employees are permitted to use Signal.
