Why does the arrival of retail giants like Amazon whip the Irish into a frenzy?

Part of the lure is the deals. But I think it’s more existential. Call it postcolonial status anxiety

The arrival of Amazon.ie in Ireland, complete with a Dublin fulfillment center, sparks both excitement and concern. Historically, Irish consumers sought better deals across borders, and Amazon's presence removes friction from online shopping. Amazon claims to support local producers through "Brands of Ireland," but some fear it will harm small businesses due to fees, returns, and Amazon's potential to use seller data to create competing products. While welcomed by some for providing opportunity, others view Amazon as a resource extractor, potentially undercutting local businesses.
