Widow of designer who died in fiery Tesla crash sues automaker claiming car had ‘defective design’

The widow of a 47-year-old designer, Sarah-Mai Miller, has filed a lawsuit against Tesla after her husband, Heath Miller, died in a fiery crash involving his Model Y. The lawsuit alleges that the vehicle had a defective design, leading to a fatal fire caused by thermal runaway. The crash occurred in February 2023 on Long Island's North Fork when the Model Y collided with an SUV. The complaint also accuses Tesla of overselling its Autopilot and Autosteer systems, which allegedly failed to function as advertised. Additionally, the lawsuit highlights that Tesla removed radar and ultrasonic sensors, relying solely on cameras, which can be less reliable. The suit claims Tesla knew about these issues but didn't warn consumers or fix them, contributing to the death. This case follows previous lawsuits against Tesla involving similar claims about battery fires and Autopilot failures, indicating a pattern of issues.
