Widow says gambling regulator ‘not protecting customers’ amid legal action

Annie Ashton, whose husband Luke died by suicide in 2021 due in part to a gambling disorder, is suing the Gambling Commission for failing to protect customers. Luke, who owed £18,000 in gambling debts, was not classified as a problem gambler, yet his inquest found Betfair's measures inadequate. The Commission declined to regulate Betfair twice, citing issues addressed during their 2021 special measures. The Commission states they take action against operators, with 56 cases resulting in £105 million payouts, but they are limited in commenting due to ongoing legal proceedings.
