8.3 million UK workers to have ‘unliveable’ sick pay despite changes, say campaigners

Exclusive: Millions of workers in the UK get just a third of minimum wage if they fall sick, putting financial strain on those with cancer struggling to pay bills

Despite government changes to the Employment Rights Bill extending sick pay to more workers, campaigners say 8.3 million UK workers will still receive "unliveable" statutory sick pay, as low as £3 an hour, when ill. This leaves many, including those with serious illnesses, facing financial hardship. The UK's sick pay protections rank poorly compared to other European countries, with SSP at just over a quarter of the minimum weekly wage, potentially forcing people back to work before they are fully recovered.
