On March 9th, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Feast of the 40 Holy Martyrs, a spring holiday filled with traditions and beliefs. It's believed that Heaven's gates open, and special foods like "Mucenici" (traditional sweet bread shaped like an 8) are prepared. People drink 40 or 44 glasses of wine. Avoid cleaning or washing, as this may bring illness for 40 days. It's a good day for farmers to clean beehives and make predictions about the weather at Easter. Planting on this day is believed to result in a forty-fold harvest.
