‘A common sense change’: Nova Scotia tables bill to reduce interprovincial trade barriers

However, provisions in the bill would only be extended to provinces or territories that adopt similar legislation

Nova Scotia's Premier Tim Houston has introduced the Free Trade and Mobility within Canada Act, aimed at reducing interprovincial trade barriers to boost the economy amid potential U.S. tariffs. The bill seeks to promote mutual recognition of goods, services, and labor mobility, treating goods from other provinces equally and eliminating extra fees. It also recognizes service providers and licensed professionals without additional requirements. However, the bill's provisions apply only to provinces adopting similar legislation. Notably, it excludes Canada's supply management system in sectors like poultry, eggs, and dairy. While opposition parties view it as a positive step, they seek more details. Nova Scotia's interprovincial exports reached nearly $29 billion in 2023.
