A look at the history of Greenland, from Viking raiders to Donald Trump

Greenland's history spans over 4,000 years, beginning with Inuit migrations from North America. Vikings, led by Erik the Red, arrived in the 10th century. Denmark colonized Greenland in the 18th century, following missionary Hans Egede. Greenland became a Danish colony after the dissolution of the Kingdom of Denmark and Norway. The U.S. extracted cryolite from Greenland and later occupied it during WWII. President Truman offered to buy Greenland, but Denmark refused. Greenland became a Danish county, though Denmark retained control. More recently, President Trump has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland.
