A million to lose disability benefit as Labour slashes £5bn off welfare bill

Work and pensions secretary Liz Kendall said the wide reaching reforms were needed as the welfare bill was ‘unsustainable’

Labour plans to cut £5bn from the welfare bill by 2030, primarily by raising the threshold to qualify for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), potentially impacting a million disabled people. The government cites an "unsustainable" rise in disability benefit claimants and aims to encourage work. The changes are projected to save £5bn in 2029-30. The reforms have faced criticism from charities, unions, Labour MPs, and think tanks, who raise concerns about increased poverty and the impact on vulnerable individuals, as well as the potential for the savings target not to be met. The government will not publish the equality impact assessment and the poverty analysis detailing the impact of benefit cuts.
