Abolishing means testing of carer’s allowance could cost €3 billion a year

Social welfare overpayments of €558 million also noted in briefing note for new Minister for Social Protection



Abolishing means testing for Ireland's carer's allowance, currently received by 99,000 individuals, could cost up to €3 billion annually. The government is committed to this change. Overpayments totaling €266 million were incorrectly received by 134,970 people. Payments to international protection applicants have been income tested since June 2024.
