Admission of stroke patients to specialist care units ‘well below target’, audit shows

Almost 2,000 missed out on being admitted to centres that help cut chances of disability and death from the condition



An independent audit of stroke care in Ireland for 2023 found that admissions to dedicated stroke units were below the HSE's 90% target, reaching only 70%, despite an 8% increase in stroke admissions. While timeliness of care improved, Early Supported Discharge and psychological assessments remained low. The audit also showed that males constituted a larger proportion of stroke patients and experienced strokes at a younger age.
