Alberta wildfire conditions in ‘substantially’ better shape than last year: minister

Alberta's forestry minister said the province's wildfire conditions are 'substantially' better this year than at the same time in 2024.

Alberta's 2025 wildfire season is starting with fewer fires compared to last year, but dry conditions and a multi-year drought mean the overall risk remains. The province has seven contained wildfires currently burning, significantly less than the 50 active fires at the same time last year. Alberta has doubled its emergency funding for disaster response to $4 billion. However, there are concerns about the number of trained firefighters ready for the season.
