Almost half a million spent so far on public inquiry into gold mine

The inquiry was suspended after just over two days of evidence last month because of ‘regulation breaches’.

A public inquiry into the controversial Dalradian Gold Mine project in County Tyrone has cost nearly £478,000, with the process being suspended twice—first in September 2024 due to water licence confusion and again in January 2025 over regulation breaches. The inquiry, led by Commissioner Jacqueline McParland, is unprecedented in complexity and scale, involving significant administrative tasks and research. While supporters highlight potential economic benefits, including job creation and economic growth, opponents, such as Fidelma O’Kane from Save Our Sperrins, express concerns over environmental and health impacts in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The inquiry's future remains uncertain, with possible transboundary consultations with the Irish government.
