Arctic sea ice hits record low for its usual peak growth period

Arctic sea ice reached its lowest peak winter extent in 47 years of record-keeping, measuring 5.53 million square miles, smaller than the previous low in 2017. Scientists attribute this to climate change, noting the Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the world, impacting global weather patterns by weakening the jet stream. The thinner ice is also expected to melt quickly in the summer, further endangering polar bear populations.
