Baby names: Jack and Sophie the most popular in Ireland in 2024

Biggest climbers in boys’ names are Rowan, Caleb and Iarlaith, according to CSO figures



In 2024, Jack and Sophie were the most popular baby names in Ireland for boys and girls, respectively, according to CSO figures. Jack has been the top boys' name for eight consecutive years, holding the number one spot every year since 2007 except 2016. Sophie, the top girls' name, replaced Grace, which dropped to third place, while Éabha ranked second. The top five girls' names include Sophie, Éabha, Grace, Emily, and Fiadh. Climbers for boys included Rowan, Caleb, and Iarlaith, with Caleb rising significantly from 142nd to 91st place. New entrants for girls were Hallie, Rhea, Caragh, and Aurora, with Rhea being the fastest-rising. The most common surname was Murphy, and 9,582 distinct newborn names were registered. Regionally, Jack and Sophie were popular in multiple areas. Historically, John was the top boys' name in 1974 but ranks 29th in 2024, while Mary, the top girls' name in 1974, is now 105th. James is the only name in the top 10 for both 1974 and 2024. For children of EU27 parents, David and Sofia were popular, while Jack and Éabha were favored for Irish parents.
