Backbench revolt grows over 'cruel' benefit cuts that could push families of 50,000 more children into poverty

MPs lined up to round on Chancellor Rachel Reeves in the Commons after her Spring Statement.

Backbenchers are revolting against government benefit cuts that could push 250,000 more people, including 50,000 children, into poverty by 2030. An internal DWP assessment found that 3.2 million families will lose an average of £1,720 a year, while 3.8 million families will gain £420 annually. Critics argue the cuts are "cruel" and will worsen poverty and health conditions, while government officials defend them as necessary to reform a "broken" welfare system and encourage work. The cuts could also push 200,000 people into absolute poverty, and 150,000 family carers are set to lose up to £500million in payments.
