Battery breakthrough as scientists turn atomic waste into electricity

Breakthrough technology promises decades of uninterrupted power

Scientists have developed a nuclear battery that converts atomic waste into electricity, offering decades of power. The battery harnesses gamma radiation from spent nuclear fuel, converting it into light via scintillator crystals, which is then transformed into electricity using solar cells. Researchers from Ohio State University created a safe, non-radioactive prototype, producing 1.5 microwatts, with potential for larger outputs. Their study, "Scintillator based nuclear photovoltaic batteries for power generation at microwatts level," was published in Optical Materials: X.
