B.C. energy minister says Columbia River Treaty not a ’bargaining chip’ in U.S. trade dispute

The treaty does not have an end date, but either the U.S. or Canada can unilaterally terminate the deal with an advance notice of at least 10 years



B.C. Energy Minister Adrian Dix stated the Columbia River Treaty is not a bargaining chip in the U.S. trade dispute, refuting claims made by then U.S. President Donald Trump about Canada supplying water. Dix highlighted ongoing efforts since 2018 to modernize the treaty, initially signed in 1961 to address flood control and electricity needs, and emphasized that terminating the treaty would have little effect on the current trade dispute.
