Canadian geoduck clam exports, 95% of which go to China, face potential devastation due to newly imposed 25% Chinese tariffs in response to Canadian tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and metals. The BC Seafood Alliance estimates $75 million in annual exports are at risk, with diversification proving difficult. Harvesters have halted harvesting anticipating lower demand, and local and domestic markets cannot fully offset lost revenue. While the U.S. also has tariffs on Chinese EVs and metals, China has not imposed tariffs on American geoduck.
