B.C. to get about $3.7 billion in tobacco lawsuit settlement

B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma says the money B.C. receives will go directly toward strengthening the health care system

British Columbia will receive approximately $3.7 billion as part of a landmark $32.5 billion Canadian settlement with major tobacco companies for health damages. The province's attorney general announced that the funds will be distributed over at least 18 years, with $900 million allocated in the first year. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice approved the settlement, described as the largest in Canadian history and the third-largest globally. The province has been pursuing accountability against tobacco companies for over two decades, focusing on their role in concealing the harmful impacts of their products. Premier David Eby emphasized the government's commitment to pursuing justice against corporations prioritizing profits over public health.
