BCUC Approves FortisBC Energy Inc. Okanagan Capacity Mitigation Project
The BCUC approved FortisBC's Okanagan Capacity Mitigation Project to address a potential natural gas capacity shortfall in the Okanagan region by the winter of 2026/27. The project, estimated to cost $50.389 million to date, includes a new LNG storage and vaporization facility at FortisBC’s Kelowna Gate Station and LNG transportation by truck from the Tilbury LNG facility. While approving the project as necessary in the short-term, the BCUC directed FortisBC to submit a long-term plan to relieve or reduce peak demand in the Okanagan region within six months. This follows the BCUC's denial of FortisBC's previous $327 million Okanagan Capacity Upgrade project in December 2023.
