Boys jumped 'massively' ahead of girls in maths and science during the pandemic, research reveals

While previously the two sexes were previously neck-and-neck in the subjects, a report from University College London (UCL) found that boys have now taken a large lead.

Research from University College London (UCL) and the Department for Education (DfE) reveals that boys have significantly surpassed girls in maths and science abilities since the pandemic. The study, comparing 2019 and 2023 test scores of 13-14 year olds across 267 schools, found boys' maths scores 26 points higher than girls in 2023, compared to only a 2-point lead in 2019. In science, boys scored 14 points higher than girls in 2023, while girls scored higher in 2019. Researchers suggest low confidence among girls may be a contributing factor. The maths gender gap in England was the largest of all countries studied.
