Jair Bolsonaro will stand trial in Brazil for allegedly plotting to poison President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and stage a coup after the 2022 election. The Supreme Federal Tribunal unanimously ruled to accept criminal charges of attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, attempted coup d’état, involvement in an armed criminal organization, and qualified damage and deterioration of listed heritage against Bolsonaro and seven others. If convicted on all charges, Bolsonaro could face up to 39 years in prison. Bolsonaro denies the charges, accusing "those in power" of authoritarian tactics.
