Brits face new tourist taxes and rental car charges on Spanish holiday islands as officials say they have 'reached their limit'

The hike in tourist taxes comes after a summer of discontent last year in which thousands of locals marched in Palma during two large demos to protest at the effects of mass tourism.

British tourists visiting the Balearic Islands (Majorca, Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera) will face increased tourist taxes on hotel stays and cruise passengers, as well as new taxes on rental cars. The government cites unsustainable growth as the reason. Local protests against over-tourism are occurring, including threats to block the island's airport.
