Brooches which copy London palace’s stained glass windows return home

Brooches designed by Cartier, featuring a falcon and a white Tudor rose, have returned to Eltham Palace in London. These diamond-encrusted pieces, once owned by Virginia Courtauld, will be displayed publicly for the first time. The brooches, a gift from her husband Sir Stephen in 1937, mirror the stained glass windows of the palace, which were designed to reflect the Tudor period. The palace, a former medieval residence, was transformed into an art-deco style in the 1930s while retaining its historic features. The brooches, acquired through auction with grants from the Art Fund and Wolfson Foundation, are considered significant both as Cartier craftsmanship and as a personal gift. They are now on display at Eltham Palace, which was once a royal residence of King Henry VIII.
