Principle of pedestrianising the street to be considered - but no details yet of how buses would be re-routed
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has launched a public consultation on his plan to pedestrianize Oxford Street, proposing the creation of a "mayoral development corporation" to oversee the transformation. The consultation, running from February 28 to May 2, seeks public input on the development corporation and pedestrianization principle. The plan includes redesignating Oxford Street as a Transport for London road, requiring parliamentary approval. Funding options, such as private investments and new revenue streams, are being explored. The Localism Act 2011's focus on regeneration over transport changes and lack of support from the Westminster council leader are noted. Bus route changes are not expected to be detailed until 2026.
