Calgary unveils housing chief amid surge in development permits after city

According to the City of Calgary, there was a 271-per cent jump in development permit applications for rowhouses after city-wide rezoning was implemented in 2024.

Calgary appointed Reid Hendry as its first chief housing officer amidst a surge in development permits following a contentious city-wide rezoning. The rezoning permits higher-density housing, leading to a significant increase in applications, particularly in areas like Bowness. Despite opposition, the city saw 20,165 housing starts, yet it falls short of meeting population growth needs, highlighting the challenge of balancing housing demand with community concerns.
