'Can't get on board': Proposed change to reporting on deaths worries Alberta child advocate

Alberta’s child and youth advocate is questioning a proposed change by Premier Danielle Smith’s government.

Alberta's child and youth advocate, Terri Pelton, opposes a proposed change by Premier Danielle Smith's government to limit investigations into deaths of young adults from age 22 to 20. The government argues this will allow the advocate to focus on those under 18, while Pelton fears it will prevent learning from the deaths of young adults to improve services for others. Pelton's office received 83 notifications of serious injuries or deaths of young people in 2023-24.
