Carney and Poilievre both vow to axe GST on new homes. Will it help?

Liberal Leader Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre have both proposed eliminating the GST on new builds. But will it help Canadians afford a home?

Liberal Leader Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre have both pledged to eliminate the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on new homes to address housing affordability concerns, a top voter issue. Carney's plan targets first-time homebuyers for homes under $1 million, while Poilievre's plan removes the GST for newly built homes under a certain value. Currently, a 5% GST/HST applies to new construction homes unless the fair market value is under $450,000.
