China Tries to Undo Damage in Latin America Ties Done by Rubio Trip

China is working to repair its strained relations with Latin America, exacerbated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio's recent tour of the region. The Chinese government met with Bolivia's top diplomat and emphasized its commitment to being a "trustworthy" partner, while state media criticized U.S. humanitarian aid efforts. China has made diplomatic gains in Latin America under former President Joe Biden, including expanding the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and reducing support for Taiwan. However, Rubio's visit to Panama led to the expiration of Panama's BRI agreement, marking a significant setback for China. Chinese officials have also denied U.S. claims of undue influence over the Panama Canal. China continues to promote its economic and diplomatic ties in the region, countering U.S. influence.
