Columbia University Agrees to Make Policy Changes After Trump Admin Pulls Funding

After the Trump administration cancelled roughly $400 million in grants and contracts, Columbia University announced policy changes, including allowing campus police to make arrests, revising protest rules, and strengthening disciplinary measures. These changes address concerns about harassment and antisemitism following October 7, 2023. Students involved in the anti-Israel encampment in spring 2024 faced suspensions, expulsions, or degree revocations. Protests are now restricted in academic buildings, facial coverings during protests require identification, and 36 new special officers have been hired. The university will also review programs related to the Middle East, including the Center for Palestine Studies and the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies.
