‘There was only room for one band member on each stepping stone. When they saw me standing in the middle of the River Wear, I imagine they just thought, “Here he goes again”’I joined the Amber Film & Photography Collective in 1983. Amber’s aim was to capture working-class life in north-east England, and over nearly 30 years I amassed a body of work documenting life in the upper Durham Dales – a project I later called People of the Hills. In 1994, I moved with my young family into a derelict plumber’s workshop and yard in Stanhope, Weardale. Living there over the next six years meant I met people in all kinds of circumstances – I got to know and photograph many local owners of smallholdings because my kids befriended theirs at school.The members of the Stanhope Silver Band, seen in this photograph, were well known in the village. The US photographer watched on enviously as young people enjoyed the artificial wave in the centre of MunichEd Templeton had woken up in Zurich, Switzerland, that morning, but by the early afternoon he’d arrived by train in Germany. He was visiting the city of Munich, and after dropping his bags at a central hotel, he walked to the city’s Englischer Garten. “It’s one of the biggest parks in Europe,” he says, and home to the Eisbach river’s famous artificial wave. “The surfers follow unwritten rules based on respect that are fascinating to watch. They line up on either side of the river and take turns. When one surfer falls off the wave and is swept away in the current, another jumps on, and everyone cheers each other on. It’s methodical and quite mesmerising. And this guy was marvellous’This photograph is named Man in a Three-piece Suit Dancing Within the Circle at a Wedding, Rockville Centre, NY, March 1976. The bride was Elaine Sherman, mother of my friend Rhonda, who I’d known since seventh grade. Mrs Sherman was getting married for the second time and the dancing man was the husband’s son-in-law, though I don’t remember his name or what he was dancing to.As the title says, it’s a circle dance, where people get into the middle and do their thing. And this guy sure did – he was marvellous. I saw him and just grabbed my camera – boom! I was using a pretty wide-angle lens and a head-on flash: I like to have people all lit up, like stage lighting. All the way to the left of the picture is a woman with just part of her face showing – that’s my mom, Sunny, who was friendly with Elaine. I wonder now how...
