Conclave: What happens when a Pope dies and how is a new Pontiff selected?

When a Pope dies, the Chamberlain confirms the death, seals the Pope's apartments, and arranges for burial, typically at St. Peter's Basilica. The process for selecting a new Pope, known as the Conclave, involves all eligible cardinals under the age of 80. They gather in Rome to vote, with rules updated in 1996 and 2013. Voting continues until a candidate receives a two-thirds majority or, after 12 days, a 50%+1 majority. Black smoke indicates no decision, while white smoke signals a new Pope. The elected Pope chooses his name and is announced to the world.
