Council tax rise for people in Merthyr Tydfil county is confirmed

Merthyr Tydfil Council has approved a 5.5% council tax increase for the 2025/26 financial year, effective after a budget meeting on March 5. This hike will result in a band D property costing £2,083.21, an increase of £108.60 or £2.09 weekly. The budget for next year totals £172.51 million, with a £9.65 million increase from the Welsh Government. The council's budget gap reduced from £8.77 million to £5.28 million, and £3.27 million in savings were identified across departments, alongside a £354,000 savings target through a transformation program. Notably, 84% of properties are in bands A to C, avoiding the higher tax. Councillors expressed mixed reactions, with some disappointed but others highlighting the focus on service efficiency.
