Council to consider $28M fix to Calgary police budget shortfall amid photo radar restrictions

Coun. Terry Wong says the police budget shortfall created by lost traffic fine revenue would significantly affect the ability of CPS to maintain service levels

Calgary City Council is considering using $28 million from municipal reserves to offset a Calgary Police Service budget shortfall caused by provincial restrictions on photo radar use, including ending 'speed-on-green' ticketing and eliminating photo radar where it lacks traffic safety benefit. The province is reducing photo radar locations by 70% and allowing use only in school, playground, and construction zones, although exemptions are possible for high-collision areas.
