David McGee named head of the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences

Specialist in paleoclimate and geochronology is known for contributions to education and community.



David McGee, the William R. Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, has been appointed as the new head of MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS), effective January 2024. He succeeds Robert van der Hilst, who led the department for 13 years. McGee, an expert in paleoclimate and geochronology, uses geochemical methods to study Earth's climate history. He has been actively involved in MIT's climate initiatives, including the Climate and Sustainability Consortium and the Environment and Sustainability Minor. With a background in secondary education, McGee has received prestigious teaching awards and has been pivotal in enhancing community engagement and student opportunities within EAPS.
