Deal reached to save power plant crucial to Williams Lake economy

Atlantic Power plant gave notice last February that it was going to pull out of the community, citing an inability to remain profitable under its current contract with BC Hydro.

A deal between the province, BC Hydro, and Atlantic Power will save the Williams Lake biomass plant from closure, ensuring the plant's continued operation until 2029. This secures 40 jobs, $1.7 million in annual city tax revenue, and electricity for 50,000 homes. Atlantic Power initially planned to close due to profitability concerns related to fuel costs.
