Decision on Grassy Mountain coal mining project expected in June

The Alberta Energy Regulator is expected to make a decision on a proposal to explore for coal in the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains by early June.

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is expected to decide in June on Northback Holdings' application to explore for coal at Grassy Mountain in Alberta's Rocky Mountains. A final AER hearing took place in Calgary after which the AER will have 90 days to make its decision. The project has faced opposition, including protests and concerns raised by First Nations members about the area's sacred significance, although some support exists due to potential economic benefits. The Grassy Mountain project was previously rejected but was granted a hearing by Alberta's Energy Minister.
