Disabled actor let go by Globe theatre after alleging sex abuse settles

A disabled playwright and actor whose contract was not renewed by Shakespeare’s Globe theatre after she alleged sexual abuse by another actor has said she feels “relieved” to have reached a legal settlement with the playhouse.

Athena Stevens, a disabled actor and playwright, alleged sexual abuse by another actor while employed at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre from 2018 to 2021. She faced harassment, discrimination, and inadequate support from the theatre, leading to her dismissal in September 2021. Stevens sued the Globe, accusing them of failing to address her concerns, including incidents of denied stage access and being left alone with performers despite her disabilities. The theatre disputed these claims, stating issues were resolved or not raised. Stevens provided evidence, including a video and voice messages, but was dismissed. The case was settled, with the Globe agreeing to an independent review of their safeguarding and accessibility procedures. Both parties expressed relief, and the Globe reaffirmed its commitment to equity and inclusion.
