US president warns levies will target auto sector and be applied ‘generally’
In February 2025, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on imports from the European Union, citing unfair trade practices and claiming the EU was "formed to screw the United States." The tariffs, which would include cars and other goods, raise the prospect of a transatlantic trade war. Ireland, with a €50 billion trade surplus with the US, is particularly exposed.
