Energy company wins planning appeal against Greater Manchester council over battery storage scheme

Green Belt land is now deemed 'grey belt' under new Government guidelines

Energy company O&G Solar, also known as Voltis, has won a planning appeal against Trafford Council over a battery storage scheme on Green Belt land in Carrington. A planning inspector allowed the appeal, stating the 0.9-acre site at Wild Fowl Farm met Labour’s new 'grey belt' land designation criteria. The facility will store excess energy during low demand and return it to the grid when needed. Trafford Council had initially refused the scheme in August 2024, deeming it inappropriate for the Green Belt. The inspector also noted the development aligns with Trafford’s sustainability goals.
