Lee Carsley's return as England U21 coach was spoiled by France, who won 5-3 with a Hugo Ekitike hat-trick. England initially led through James McAtee but France quickly equalized and took the lead. Ekitike completed his hat-trick in the second half, and Cherki added another goal before Hutchinson's late red card.
